Proximity logistics offer a counter approach to logistics sprawl, bringing logistics operations back to urban centers. In the example, a logistics provider in the groupage and less-than-truckload (LTL) segment operates an urban consolidation center (UCC) in Düsseldorf. This provider supports inner-city businesses by offering receiver-led consolidation, stockholding, and other services. The case presented in a recent paper demonstrates that a successful UCC or proximity logistics facility for shops doesn’t require high-cost space within central urban areas.
Relocating these facilities to other feasible locations within cargo-bike-friendly distances can make them practical alternatives. The researchers conclude that key logistics infrastructure, like ports and centrally located logistics facilities, is essential for shifting toward sustainable urban freight transport, a transformation municipal governments should initiate.
